Devotional Service

Krishna's Mercy

Hanuman worshipping Sita and Rama Devotional service, or bhakti yoga, is the best method for achieving transcendental realization. In today’s society, the term “yoga” is generally associated with gymnastics poses and various breathing exercises. However, yoga is a term originating from the Vedas and it means to have union with the Supreme, or God. Yoga is meant to be a completely spiritual activity.

There are various types of yoga, such as jnana yoga (meditational/contemplation), karma yoga (fruitive activity), and hatha yoga (body positions/exercises). Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, describes all of them in detail in the Bhagavad-gita. Of all the different types of yoga, bhakti yoga is considered the highest since it involves loving devotion to God. Though devotional service can be classified as a means of self-realization, it is actually the natural disposition of all living entities. We are all part and parcels of God and it is our true nature…

Krishna's Mercy

Question: “I recently heard an interesting point of view. It says that Hiranyakashipu actually glorified God more than his son, the famous Prahlada. How can that be, considering that Prahlada was such a great devotee of the Lord?”

The demigods and the demons. The good guys and the bad guys. The pious matched up against the sinners. This struggle has been going on since before anyone can remember. The Sanskrit words for the two parties are sura and asura. Based on the definitions, we see that the latter is merely the…

Do I Have To Conquer The Senses In Order To Reach Krishna

Krishna's Mercy

[Rasa dance]“Everyone is bound by his fruitive activities, but the devotees, because they work completely for the satisfaction of the Lord, suffer no reactions. Similarly, the gopis’ attitude toward Krishna, although seemingly lusty, should not be considered to be like the lusty desires of ordinary women. The reason is explained by Krishna Himself. Activities in devotional service to Krishna are transcendental to any fruitive result.” (Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vol 1, Ch 22)

Friend1: Conquering means not being driven by them. Think of it like sitting down at your…

Five Ways That Krishna Is Different From A Demigod

Krishna's Mercy

One group recommends worshiping the panchopasana. They believe in spirituality, but the end goal is merging into the formless Absolute Truth. Every living being is the same at the core. There is no Supreme Deity, just certain people who are more realized than others. Once everyone becomes spiritually realized, they merge back together.

The panchopasana is a collection of five deities. They are gods, in a sense, and there is really no difference between them. The appearance is different, that’s all. They are different manifestations of Brahman. Worship any one that you like, but keep in mind that the goal is detachment from the senses. Once you become advanced enough, you will…

Five Devotees Who Abandoned Someone Close To Them

Krishna's Mercy

[Vamanadeva]“You have promised to give Him three steps of land in charity, but when you give it He will occupy the three worlds. You are a rascal! You do not know what a great mistake you have made. After giving everything to Lord Vishnu, you will have no means of livelihood. How then shall you live?” (Shukracharya speaking to Bali Maharaja, Shrimad Bhagavatam, 8.19.33)

Friends and family. They are our support system. The parents are likely the first people we see after emerging from the womb. By extension, they become the people we have known the longest. The respectable personalities are referred to in Sanskrit as guru. Though the word often has the meaning of spiritual guide, it can refer to any person who holds weight with us, whose authority we respect, trust, and rely on.

Devotional service, bhakti-yoga, is dedicated…
